radiation safety legislation Flashcards
why do we need safety regulations?
keep patients and staff safe
Exposure levels were
higher in the past
There are risks associated with exposure to X-rays
The basic principles of the ICRP system are that all radiation
exposures should be:
Justified: They must do more good than harm
Optimised: exposures, and the
number of persons exposed, must be As Low As Reasonably
Practicable.
Limited: A system of individual radiation dose limits is used to
ensure no person receives an unacceptable level of exposure
The employer should consult an Radiation protection advisor on certain
matters:
regular equipment checks
radiation risk assessments
investigations
what are local rules ?
rules put in place to ensure safe working in the X-ray area
IRMER17 defines particular roles during medical exposures which are?
referrer- refer for theX-ray to be taken.
practitioner -they must justify why we are taking the X-ray
operator- carried out by the operator
Employer- the image and report are provided to the employer
how often are tests carried out to make sure equipment is working
1-3 years
what are the requirements of a controlled area for standard dental radiography?
within 1.5m of the xray tube head and patient
who is in charge of radiographs and who governs radiography
?
FGDP
dental practitioner
What does IIR17 regulate?
And what are some of them ?
Radiation safety of staff members
And members of the public
Controlled areas
Local rules
Risk assessments - as low as reasonably practicable
What does IRMER17 govern?
Medical exposures of patients and others
Exposures must be justified and optimised
Staff must be trained and entitled
