what do you see in a panoramic radiograph?
The most common extra-oral radiograph in dentistry
Designed to provide a clear view of the entire maxilla and mandibular region
Create an orthogonal view of the teeth
tmj
maxillary sinuses
how does a panoramic radiograph work?
Controlled rotation of X-ray source & receptor around head during exposure
what is the exposure technique for a panoramic radiograph and how long does it take?
exposed from one side to the other takes 14 seconds
what is the Linear tomography technique?
X-ray source moves in one direction while receptor moves in opposite direction
what is an advantage and a disadvantage of a panoramic radiograph?
adv- Improves angulation to more accurately represent interdental periodontal bone levels
dis- higher dose of radiation
what is the differences between panoramic radiograph and a periapical advantages and disadvantages
adv panoramic (OPT) Can capture entire dentition in one image
can capture other structures eg maxillary sinuses ,TMJ
Lack of intra-oral holders benefits some patients
* e.g. gaggers, trauma cases, young children
dis- longer exposure time
increases risk of patient moving
higher radiation exposure 5x more
what are the main components to a panoramic machine?
- X-ray tubehead
- Receptor (usually digital)
- Control panel
- Patient-positioning apparatus
during a panoramic radiograph a patient must?
stay still
press tongue against palate
not talk or swallow
