Prejudice and discrimination is taught and passes down to children (socialization)
Examine the normative theory
Originates in functionalism, suggests people are exposed to group norms, prejudice is caused by socialization
What did Robert Merton add to normative theory?
Questioned how people don’t act/think in racist ways when exposed to it and why people are racist when it isn’t accepted, thus discrimination comes before
Define success norms
Norms in which individuals are expected to succeed (ex. getting a job, going to school, etc)
