Define essentialism
Concept of an “essence” within an individual that determines their characteristics and behavours that is tied to their gender
Define social constructionism
Development of “gendered” jobs in the capitalist structure that isolates the social genders
What are the basics of the critics of essentialism?
Ignores historical/cultural variability, changes within society that change gender, rapidly declining gender differences, influence of power, has poor research, generalizes, and exaggerates differences
Explain the idea of a “double work day”
When women enter the work force, they work once at their place of employment and again at home with chores/responsibilities
Define sex segregation
The separation of sexes in the economy
Define sex-typing
Act of stereotyping based on sex
Explain the idea of a “glass ceiling”
As a woman advances in the workplace, opportunities are visible above them but not reachable due to their sex
Define non-standard work
Employment like part time work, work not paid by the hour, contract or seasonal work, temporary positions, or that which has no benefits

Power - ability to impose will onto other people
Prestige - social ranking and level of respect
Wealth - economic resources to pay for life necessities
