RAAS Flashcards
What activates RAAS?
Hypovolaemia
Hypotension
What is the role of the ANS?
Baroreceptor reflex
detects low blood pressure, responds
results in increased sympathetic tone
What activates the kidneys?
Decreased renal perfusion
due to decrease in blood pressure
Increased sympathetic tone
What do the kidneys do when activated?
Secrete more renin
What is the role of the liver?
Secrete angiotensinogen into blood
What type of secretion is involved in the liver secreting angiotensinogen?
Constitutive secretion
What is the function of renin?
To cleave angiotensinogen into angiotensin 1
What is the role of the lung endothelial cells?
Secrete angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE)
What is the role of ACE?
Cleave angiotensin 1 into angiotensin 2
What is the role of angiotensin 2?
Cause vasoconstriction
Stimulate adrenal cortex - to release aldosterone
Stimulate posterior pituitary - to release ADH
What are the effects of aldosterone?
Increased expression of Na+ K+ pump
Increased reabsorption of Na+
Increased retention of water
Increased blood volume, blood pressure
What are the effects of ADH?
Translocation of aquaporin channels
What do aquaporin channels do?
Aid reabsorption of water back into blood
