R2103 2.2 Describe the biology of weeds Flashcards
1
Q
What is an ephemeral weed?
A
- A weed that can complete several lifecycles with a year.
- Roots are usually shallows
- Seeds often germinate throughout the year
2
Q
Example of ephemeral weeds
A
- Cardamine hirsuta (Hairy bittercress)
- Capsella bursa-pastoris (Shepherds purse)
3
Q
What is an annual weed (6)
A
- Cycle within year
- They grow from seeds on any recently cultivated soil
- Seeds can survive for years in the ground
- They germinate at lower temperatures than most garden plants giving them a head start over rivals
- Best to recognise them at the seedling stage and weed them out
- Most can be hoed out or pulled out easily. Do before seed head form.
4
Q
Examples for annual weeds
A
- Veronica persica (Speedwell)
- Poa annua (Meadow grass)
5
Q
What is a perennial weed (6)
A
- Live for several years
- Survive winter by storing food in their roots
- Difficult to dig out - root often spread widely underground
- Never rotovate soils with a perennial weed problem
- Dig out as soon as you see them - as long as they cant produce leaves the roots will use up all the energy and die
- Never put perennial weeds in composts
6
Q
Examples of perennial weeds
A
- Ranunculus repens (creeping buttercup)
- Aegopodium podagraria (ground elder)
7
Q
2 Examples of weeds found in recently cultivated soils

- Sonchus oleraceus (Fat hen)
8
Q
2 Examples of weeds found in herbaceous perennial borders
A
- Convolvulus arvensis (Field bindweed)
- Stellaria media
9
Q
2 Examples of weeds found in woody perennial plantings
Roots entwine with existing shrubs and perennials
A
- Galium aparine (Cleavers)
