SOG 407 High Rise :

“Attack One” Operational Priority -

A
  • Ensure the first engineer is in designated location (panel control) and engaged
  • Ensure that fire phones and master keys have been secured (if available)
  • Advance to the landing two floors below the reported fire location. Periodically check the conditions on lower floors as ascending
  • Upon arrival at the reported fire floor, report conditions, actions, needs. In case of radio malfunction, fire phones must be used. Communications are mandatory for safety
  • All efforts should be directed around placing the first hose line in service for fire suppression
  • In the event that one of the initial ladder companies located the fire in advance of initial fire attack team, follow their lead. This may involve crossing over to the opposite stairwell while on a lower floor or requesting that Command send a 2nd attack team to ascend the opposite stairwell. This could result in using a much closer standpipe outlet and a shorter stretch. Coordination is key. Never push a fire down a hallway towards an unprotected ladder company.

Standpipe and Sprinkler Operations
Three points from the manual that need to be emphasized :

A
  1. When connecting to an FDC, the FF can connect to one side only and charge it prior to the second line being charged, saving valuable time. If a high rise buildings internal fire pump is not working properly, FFs on upper floors will not have adequate pressure. Speed is of essence in this situation
  2. JFRD PDPs are initial operating guidelines only. These calculations will need to be adjusted based on circumstances such as building height, Fire location, hose diameter, and nozzle requirements
  3. While connected to the FDC in pump gear, don’t forget to circulate water (recirculating valve of other means) This is to prevent overheating in the pump in the event that there is nothing flowing in the building

Residential High Rise Considerations: (4)

A

  • If smoke has extended into public hallway, all rooms on the fire floor will need to be searched
  • Ensure any elevator lobbies are searched for fleeing occupants
  • Hydra ram/Rabbit tool (HFT) will be valuable tool for forcing many doors in low visibility conditions and will reduce fatigue

  • Floors are often divided with short partitions/cubicles that lack floor to ceiling
  • Use of a search rope will be essential and several taglines may be necessary to search off the main search line
