R&R, SOP, SAP, SOG Part 2 Flashcards
SOG 407 High Rise :
Enter the lobby and take the following actions - (8)
- Obtain information from the building management/security regarding the known extent of the emergency
- Obtain fire alarm control panel history if actively alarming
- Obtain building plans and the fire control plan (if available)
- Obtain fire phones (if available)
- Obtain master keys to rooms, stairwell doors, elevators, windows, etc. (if available) Have electric locks deactivated by Building Representative if applicable
- Determine initial means of ascent
- Form fire attack teams with minimum of 5 engine company personnel, one of which is an OIC
SOG 407 High Rise :
First due engineer proceeds where?
What is title of this position?
What do they do?

SOG 407 High Rise :
When will stairs be used for initial ascent?
If reported location of fire is BELOW the 7th floor
SOG 407 High Rise :
In the event of radio malfunction, who is responsible for relaying all communications between the fire attack teams and Command, via fire phones if available?
Panel control
SOG 407 High Rise :
“Attack One” Operational Priority -
- Ensure the first engineer is in designated location (panel control) and engaged
- Ensure that fire phones and master keys have been secured (if available)
- Advance to the landing two floors below the reported fire location. Periodically check the conditions on lower floors as ascending
- Upon arrival at the reported fire floor, report conditions, actions, needs. In case of radio malfunction, fire phones must be used. Communications are mandatory for safety
- All efforts should be directed around placing the first hose line in service for fire suppression
- In the event that one of the initial ladder companies located the fire in advance of initial fire attack team, follow their lead. This may involve crossing over to the opposite stairwell while on a lower floor or requesting that Command send a 2nd attack team to ascend the opposite stairwell. This could result in using a much closer standpipe outlet and a shorter stretch. Coordination is key. Never push a fire down a hallway towards an unprotected ladder company.
SOG 407 High Rise :
Where is the mandatory brief stop?
What should you do?
- The landing two floors below the reported fire
- Survey the floor plan and take note of the standpipe valve type. Also, determine the feasibility of this location being used as a “Forward Staging Area”

- Hold
SOG 407 High Rise :
When would turning the key off to put the car back into Phase I mode be beneficial?
During initial operations
SOG 407 High Rise :
If a building has lost power due to a fire or any other reason, the elevators may not work. If the building has a backup power supply generator or other) there may be limited power available to operate the elevators. What is this situation referred to as being?
Emergency Power Operations
SOG 407 High Rise :
Standpipe and Sprinkler Operations
Three points from the manual that need to be emphasized :
- When connecting to an FDC, the FF can connect to one side only and charge it prior to the second line being charged, saving valuable time. If a high rise buildings internal fire pump is not working properly, FFs on upper floors will not have adequate pressure. Speed is of essence in this situation
- JFRD PDPs are initial operating guidelines only. These calculations will need to be adjusted based on circumstances such as building height, Fire location, hose diameter, and nozzle requirements
- While connected to the FDC in pump gear, don’t forget to circulate water (recirculating valve of other means) This is to prevent overheating in the pump in the event that there is nothing flowing in the building
SOG 407 High Rise :
Other options for high rise water supply?
Improvised standpipe (Ladder Truck) or exterior hoisting with a rope bag

MAYDAY in the event of of radio malfunction (Repeater in use) following procedures apply : (5)
• Orange “Mayday” button does not work on portable radios utilizing a “repeater”
• Down FF and RIT team remain on repeater channel
• All other interior operations switch to a Simplex Channel (A-11)
• Exterior operations remain on primary bravo channel (B-1, B-5, etc)
• All other RIT procedures follow
(RIT SOG 408) where applicable
SOG 407 High Rise :
Search Priority - (4)
- Fire floor
- Floor directly above fire floor
- Top floor
- Work down from top floor
SOG 407 High Rise : Initial Operations (1st Alarm Companies) may be “immediately” overwhelmed with victims during a serious fire. If the fire is on an upper floor and evacuation is the only option, proceed as follows : (4)
- Move victims to the first tenable floor below the fire (collection point)
- Report victim count, needed equipment (stair chairs, drag devices, etc)
- Return to fire floor for additional victims
- Leave a FF at collection point until relieved by additional resources (2nd Alarm Companies)
SOG 407 High Rise :
Residential High Rise Considerations: (4)
- Fire attack team should assist in search of apartment of origin as hose line is advanced
- If smoke has extended into public hallway, all rooms on the fire floor will need to be searched
- Ensure any elevator lobbies are searched for fleeing occupants
- Hydra ram/Rabbit tool (HFT) will be valuable tool for forcing many doors in low visibility conditions and will reduce fatigue
SOG 407 High Rise :
Commercial high rise considerations : (3)
- Large floor areas will complicate search efforts. Multiple companies may be needed to search one floor
- Floors are often divided with short partitions/cubicles that lack floor to ceiling
- Use of a search rope will be essential and several taglines may be necessary to search off the main search line
