R Flashcards
Rain green
Deciduous in response to precipitation
Reanalysis data
Data, based on observations, that have been reanalysed using models to remove random sources of variability and error.
Reductionist
Approach to studying complex systems of phenomena by reducing then to their simple of fundamental components.
Regression
A statistical method which exploits the reduction in total variance to determine the significance of particular factors.
Rendzina
A think soil developed over a calcareous parent rock that has A and C horizons, but no B horizon.
Resivoir
The amount of material stored in different parts of the environment; tends to be used for long term storage.
Residence time
The average length of time that a material remains within a pool. It expresses how fast that material moves through a system.
Residual
The difference (deviation) of an observed value from the predicted value in the regression.
Resilience hypothesis
Concept, that following a change in env conditions, community composition follows a pattern on delayed recovery that is described by a catastrophic curve, in which there are alternate stable states.
Resilience
Measure of the ability of an ecosystem to resist change and or the rate at which an ecosystem recovers after a disturbance and returns to a steady state.
Resilient
An ecosystem that is resilient is one that is resistant to change and or recovers quickly following disturbance.
Resolution
The level of detail represented by a model, determined by the size or number of its grid cells.
Resorption
The process by chin nitrogen and other nutrients may be withdrawn from senescing tissues into the perennial biomass before leaves are shred; also known as internal recycling.
Resource
An aspect of the env for which organisms compete for and which they consume. Eg water, nutrient, light energy. Contrasts with condition.
Response
The reaction to a change in input to a system.
