14
Q

When the AHL reaches a certain extracellular concentration?

A

When the population level exceeds a certain level the AHL molecules exceed the threshold concentration and are recognised by transcriptional regulators. The AHL regulatory complex then leads to the expression of various virulence genes

15
Q

Why are virulence genes expressed in a density dependent manner?

A

Only want to produce virulence effectors when there are many cells around as then the bacterium will be able to produce high enough quantities to cause an impact. If a single bacterium produced effectors alone they would simply diffuse away

16
Q

LasR-HSL complex does what?

A
  • Autoinduction by increasing LasI expression
  • Induces the production of RhIR
  • Activates genes e.g. those producing exotoxin A
17
Q

RhIR-HSL complex does what?

A
  • Autoinduction by increasing RhlI expression

- Activates genes e.g. those producing rhamnolipids, HCN and pyocyanin

18
Q

Las system leads to the production of what virulence factors?

A

Exotoxin A

19
Q

RhI system leads to the production of which virulence factors?

A

Pyocyanin, HCN, Rhamnolipids

20
Q

Relationship between the Las and Rhl systems?

A

The Las system can directly activate the RhI system through the LasR-HSL complex which directly up-regulates RhlR transcription

21
Q

What molecule links the activation of T3SS to QS?

A

Vfr

22
Q

What is Vfr?

A

Virulence factor regulator

23
Q

What is he coactivator of Vfr?

A

cAMP

24
Q

Vfr can activate?

A

Quorum sensing and T3SS

25
Q

High levels of cAMP favour which lifecycle?

A

The acute lifecycle

26
Q

What is the signalling molecule in the AHL independent quorum sensing regulatory network?

A

PQS

27
Q

PQS stands for?

A

Pseudomonas Quinolone Signal

28
Q

How is PQS made?

A

Chorismic acid turns into HHQ which is converted into PQS via pqsH

29
Q

What converts chorismic acid into HHQ?

A

pqsABCD proteins

30
Q

What converts HHQ into PQS?

A

pqsH

31
Q

Once a certain extracellular concentration of PQS is reached it binds?

A

pqsR

32
Q

pqsR-PQS complex then?

A

Binds to DNA and leads to the activation of the pqsABCDE operon
Increase in PQS= autoinduction
Production of pqsE
Production of pyocyanin

33
Q

pqsE leads to the production of?

A

HCN
Pyocyanin
Rhamnolipids

34
Q

Overall, quorum sensing is more involved with controlling which lifestyle?

A

Acute lifestyle
