who were the boers and what was the Boer war?

A

the UK had colonies in south Africa. the boers were the colonists who settled there. they are now referred to as the afrikaners. they are the majority of the white population of South Africa.
the war began because there was a lot of gold there and the British wanted to get it. this started the war. the British called Canadas to help. the imperialists supported this but the French Canadian nationalists opposed it. they opposed it because they didn’t think it was Canada’s problem to deal with. 7000 volunteers ended up going to help.

laurier government
the Canadian economy began to benefit from MacDonalds national policy.
the government focused on immigration mainly in western Canada. the strategies to support this are publishing brochures, posters in many different languages, opening immigration offices around Europe, giving free land to immigrants and paying immigrants passage to come to Canada.

in the early 20th century, 1/3 of the immigrants in Canada were from the USA and 1/3 was from the united kingdom.
1/3 was mostly Europeans of various origins as well as other immigrants fewer in number from different regions in the world especially Asia.

they were xenophobic. the English Canadians feared that the rise in immigrants would threaten their own culture. the Canadian government added taxes that increased over the years for the asian immigrants to come. they also put a limit on how many of them can come per year.
only 400 Japanese immigrants were able to come per year.
there was a 100$ tax that was increased to 500$

the arrival of immigrants changed Canada demographically(population) and territorially. Migration flows to western Canada had an impact on the organization of the territory.
there was a distribution of land which led to an increase of agricultural land.
