Quiz Eight Flashcards
autonomy- two key features
first: autonomous behavior is governed by plans of action that have been formulated through deliberation or reflection
second: autonomous behavior issues, intentionally and voluntarily, from choices people make based upon their own life plans
constraints on autonomy
physical constraints like prison, cognitive restraints from lack of information or an inability to understand that information, psychological constraints from anxiety or depression, social constraints from institutionalized roles and expectations, illness
phase I clinical trials
initial testing of a drug in human subjects, primary purpose is to identify toxicities rather than evaluate therapeutic effectiveness
3 limitations on the exercise of autonomy
First: pts may not require that they be treated by non-medical means
Second: pts may not require that they be given scientifically futile treatment
Third: pts may not require that they be treated in ways that are inconsistent with the ends of medicine, that is, in ways that are outside of the scope of medicine
