quiz 7 Flashcards
1
Q
Explain deforestation’s impact on climate change?
A
- Trees are carbon sinks because they store co2 during photosynthesis
- co2 is released when trees are burnt
- There is a higher concentration of co2 in the atmosphere
- Infrared radiation is absorbed and remitted to earth
- consequently earths temperatures increase
2
Q
Explain deforestations impact on soil erosion?
A
- prior to deforestation the leaves of trees will slow rates of infiltration
- tree roots bind the soil preventing soil erosion
3.cutting down trees stop
interception
4.As there are no leaves to block rainfall infiltration will occur much faster - The soil will not be able to absorb all the water so it will be saturated
- This will cause surface run-off so nutrients will be washed away causing the soil to be infertile
7.water that has been infiltrated
will wash out nutrients from the soil(leeching)
- farmers will eventually have to move their subsitence/commercial farm because the soil has become infertile so they cant grow crops
- farmers will have to cut down or burn more trees to access fertile soil
3
Q
Explain deforestation impact on economic development
A
- TNC’S like valve provide 70k jobs at the carajas iron mine in Venezuela
- High paying jobs in the primary sector
- Local people have more disposable income
- spend more in local businesses
- Local businesses pay more taxes to the government
- Government has more money to invest in services such as healthcare, education and infrastructure
- Increased development attracting more TNcs
4
Q
outline the process of desertification
A
plants in an area reduced
their roots no longer prevent soil erosion
nutrients in the soil are washed away
the soil becomes sandy and infertile
