quiz 11 Flashcards
What occurs in coastal transportation?
material is moved from one place to another
Name the 3 types of erosion
abrasion,attrition and hydraulic action
What is deposition
When sediment being carried by the water is dropped
What occurs in freeze-thaw weathering
Water enters cracks in rocks
the water freezes and expands
the crack expands
the ice melts and fills up the now larger crack
the process repeats until the rock breaks apart
What is erosion?
when land or rocks wear away due to waves
How does erosion occur by abrasion?
rocks scrape and scour the river beds and banks
What are the main 2 types of weathering?
chemical and mechanical
How does longshore drift occur?
waves approach the beach at an angle. swash carries sediment up the beach and the backwash carries sediment back down the beach this forms a zig-zag formation transporting sediment along the coast
What occurs in mechanical weathering
rocks are broken down by physical processes like freeze-thaw weathering
What effect does mass movement have on a coastline?
leads to the coast moving further back/retreating cliffs gradually wear away
What is mass movement?
when rocks or earth move down a slope
How does erosion occur by hydraulic action?
the sheer force of the water smash into rocks , forcing air into the rocks causing cracks to form
What are the 3 main types of mass movement?
sliding,slumping and rock falls
How does erosion occur by attrition?
rocks smash into each other making a smaller, smoother and rounder rock
