Quiz 5/3/22 Flashcards
What is a flail segment
It occurs when two or more consecutive ribs have been fractured in two or more places, producing a freely moving section of chest wall
Paradoxical movement
The flail segment moves in a direction opposite of the movement of the rest of the chest wall
Pulmonary contusion
Bleeding occurs in and around the alveoli and into the interstitial Space that separates the alveoli and capillaries. This greatly reduces the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide.
Tension pneumothorax
Completely collapse is the injured long and begins to compress and shift the mediastinum Over the injured side. The uninjured long heart and large veins are compressed leaving to pour cardiac output and hypotension from a reduced preload, ineffective ventilation, inadequate oxygenation, And severe hypoxia
Traumatic asphyxia
Occurs when severe and sudden compression of the thorax causes a rapid increase in pressure in the chest.
Cardiac contusion
Is a common cardiac injury following severe blunt trauma to the chest. It occurs as a heart is violently compressed between the sternum and the spinal column.
The right ventricle directly beneath the sternum is the most likely area of the heart to be injured
Most common cause of Pericardial tamponade
The most common cause is a penetrating wound to the heart from a knife or similar object
What organs are located in the retroperitoneal cavity
The pancreas, inferior vena cava, aorta , kidneys, uterus, duodenum
What is peritonitis
The leaking contents might include gastric juices from the stomach, highly acidic and partially digested food from the upper small intestine, bacteria from the large intestine, or urine from the bladder.
Kern sign
Blood might irritate the diaphragm and cause referred pain to the shoulder
