What do you do to prevent a harmful dual relationship?
Before taking a new CT:
- secondary relationships
- outside contact
- don’t barter
- don’t date
Bartering. Is it unethical?
Yes, but only in large cities because of the assumed access to care.
When is bartering okay?
- Goods only (not task based)
- in small town
When are dual relationships okay?
If they’re unavoidable, say, bc you live in a small town. But must collaborate with CT re run-ins
Are all dual relationships avoidable?
No
What to consider if your CT wants a non-sexual, secondary relationship?
- depth of tranference
- length of TH/CT relationship
What should you include on IC?

- Responsibility for decisions
- Education Info re: training, expert at…
- Limits of confidentiality and privilege
- Limits of confidentiality (electronic…)
- Fees
Ethical aspects of IC
- Nature and limitations of confidentiality
- TH mandates
- when would TH release info to 3rd party
- no secrets policy
- alt treatments…
- many more. What you would want to know from TH (who makes decisions —CT, TH training and fees, who terminates when… etc)
Legal aspects of IC
- Fees prior to 1st session
- Fictitious name?
- License displayed
- Status of license
How long do you keep records of CTs?
7 years after termination. If they are a minor, 7 years after they turn 18.
