Quiz 3 Flashcards
Nature impacts on intelligence
50% of the variability in intelligence can be explained by genes, structures in prefrontal cortex may also play a role
Nurture impacts on intelligence
Education, health, culture, historical events, stressors, substance abuse
Seattle Intelligence Study design and findings
Cross Sequential Design
Found that spatial orientation and inductive reasoning declined at 53 in both m*w. Verbal meaning decrease at 53m 60w. Number ability 46m 39w. Word fluency 39m 53w.
Vision-Adulthood
Nearsightedness (difficulty seeing far objects). Decreases: dark+light adjusting, motion perception, contrast sensitivity
Vision- Late Adulthood
Only 10% of men and 10% of women see well without glasses over 65
Hearing- Adulthood
Less acute overtime: lose high frequency sounds before low frequency sounds, whispers become inaudible
Hearing- Late Adulthood
39% of men and women report trouble hearing , presbycusis (hearing loss due to senescence)
Self-esteem + depression - adulthood
Steady rise in self-esteem, moderate levels of depression
Self-esteem + depression - late adulthood
Steady rise in self-esteem, decrease in depression
What is senescence?
The condition or process of deterioration with age
Effects of senescence
Organs lose reserve capacity, brain slows (multi-tasking more difficult), muscles shrink joints less flexible
Stratification theories
Focus on how social forces differentiate people via sex race and SES and how these forces may interact in late adult hood to limit individual choices and functioning
Critique of stratification theories
Some group disparities are multi directional.
Erikson conflict
Intimacy vs. Isolation(complex relationships), Generativity vs. Stagnation(contribute to society), Integrity vs. Despair(reflect on life)
