Quiz 3 Flashcards
Reaction Quotent: Keq
when the reaction is at equilibrium
Reaction Quotent: Q
when reaction is not at equilibrium
Keq=
Products/Reactants
if k «_space;1
reactants will be favored
if k»1
products are favored
if Q>Keq then
the reaction will go twards the reactants to achieve equilibrium
if Q<Keq then
the reaction will go twards the products to achieve equilibrium
Kfoward=
1/Kreverse
Don’t include pure solids or liquids in
- the calculation for Q or Keq
- Calculating Δn
Ways to aviod using the quadratic formula
- if k is small then you can assume x is small
- take a square root on both sides if there is a perfect square
- if k is large then assume the reaction goes all the way to products then back to reactants a little bit and assume k is small
- Successive approximation: assume x is smal, with the approximated x put it back into the equation and solve again
Reaction Quotent: Ksp
solubility products: tells you how soluble something is
* does not have a denominator
Ksp large
more soluble
Ksp small
less soluble
Kp=Kc(RT)^Δn
Kp= pressure
Kc= consentration
R=0.0806
T= tempertuare in kelvin
Δn= coefficent of products- coefficent of reactants
Le chatelier’s principle
the system trys to undo what was done to it
* There will be no change in the equilibrium if there is the same # of molecues on both sides
