Quiz 2 : Strategies for Learning ASL Flashcards
What should you do to build a language community?
Go to class, maintain a signing environment in the classroom, during class breaks, before class begins, and whenever Deaf people are present
Second strategy for learning ASL?
Minimize reliance on English as you listen or converse in ASL
What should you do to minimize reliance on English as you listen or converse in ASL?
Leave English outside the door. Try not to translate in your head as you watch someone sign. Don’t worry about notes, immerse yourself in the language with interaction.
Third strategy for learning ASL?
Focus on meaning rather than individual signs
What should you do to focus on meaning rather than individual signs?
Try not to worry about a sign you missed or don’t know, instead focus on the meaning of what’s being said. Ask a teacher if you don’t know a repeatedly used sign. Try avoiding asking classmates for English translation.
4th strategy for learning ASL?
Focus on the signers face, not the hands for two important reasons
2 reasons to focus on signers face instead of hands?
- A lot of grammar is in facial expressions so to fully understand what’s being said you need to see the face and sign
- It’s considered rude to look away from the signers face while they’re signing to you
What’s the 5 strategy for learning ASL?
Show you understand the signer. Give puzzled looks, nod, responding with “huh?” “Wow” or “really?” Listeners have very active roles in signed conversations. Participate as much as possible with comments, agreeing/disagreeing, etc. Follow all conversations.
