Quiz #2: Issac Newton Flashcards
Who was he?
An English mathematician and physicist
Where is he from?
Woolsthrope, Lincolnshire, England
Where did he go to school?
Trinity College in Cambridge
Newton and Leibniz shared what?
The development of the integral in calculus
Discoveries in optics
He discovered light is complex and heterogeneous rather than homogenous which was previously thought.
What did he build?
He built the first reflecting telescope using curved mirrors instead of lenses.
Laws of gravity
The apple myth: during the mid 1600s, apple fell and inspired Newton to come up with the theory of gravity.
The universal law of gravity
Every point mass attracts every single other point mass by a force acting along the line intersecting both points. The force is proportional to the product of the two masses and inversely proportional to the square of distance between them.
First Law of Motion
If a body is at rest or moving at a constant speed in a straight line, it will remain at rest or keep moving in a straight line at constant speed unless it is acted upon by an unbalancedforce
Second Law of Motion
The acceleration produced on a body by a net force is proportional to the magnitude of the force and inversely proportional to the mass of the object.
Third Law of Motion
For every action there is an opposite and equal reaction.
What else did Newton study?
Alchemy.
He worked with “sophick mercury”
