Apollo 11 Flashcards
What was the Apollo 11 mission?
The first man to walk on the moon.
Project Apollo
Project Apollo was the largest non-military effort in the history of human civilization.
Project Apollo had a total of 28 missions, which included flight tests, un-crewed launches, and manned launches.
Why is Apollo one significant?
Caught on fire and three men died.
Components of Apollo 11 space craft
The Saturn V had a pretty simple detachment procedure. Each stage had a fuel load, and after a stage would burn off its fuel, it would detach from the rest of the rocket. The next stage would then fire its engine and propel the rocket forward on its trajectory.
Stage 1 was the most powerful. The first stage carried Apollo 11 to about 68 km (42 miles) above Earth’s surface. From there it detached and Stage 2 began its work.
Stage 2 took Apollo 11 mostly into Earth orbit, but not completely. Stage 3 completed carrying the astronauts into Earth orbit, and once they were ready it allowed them to make a translunar injection.
Stages 1 and 2 fell into the ocean, while Stage 3 either stayed in space or hit the moon.
At the top of the rocket were the command module (CM), service module (SM), and the lunar module (LEM)
