New Horizons Flashcards
What was the New Horizons?
NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft is the first spacecraft to explore Pluto up close
Destinations of the New Horizons?
Pluto
2014 MU69
Kuiper Belt
What is the Kuiper Belt?
A donut-shaped region of icy bodies beyond the orbit of Neptune. There may be millions of these icy objects.
Ice dwarfs
Pluto and moon, Charon
New Horizon payload
payload consists of seven instruments – three optical instruments, two plasma instruments, a dust sensor and a radio science receiver/radiometer. This payload was designed to investigate the global geology, surface composition and temperature, and the atmospheric pressure, temperature and escape rate of Pluto and its moons.
How high above Pluto did New Horizon fly?
4,800
Charon
scientists expected Charon to be a monotonous, crater-battered world; instead, they’re finding a landscape covered with mountains, canyons, landslides, surface-color variations and more.
Ultima Thule
Ultima Thule is the first unquestionably primordial contact binary ever explored. the binary consists of a large, flat lobe (nicknamed “Ultima”) connected to a smaller, rounder lobe (nicknamed “Thule”).
Hydra
Hydra, Pluto’s outermost small moon, is dominated by nearly pristine water ice.
