abx that decrease BC effectiveness
PCN amox sulfa/trimethoprim minocycline metronidazole nitrofurantoin
if 1+ pill missed in 1st week
take 1 asap, then use condom for 1wk`
if 1 or 2 pills missed in 2nd or 3rd week
take 1 asap then continue w active pills, skip placebo and go straight to new pack when done w actives
3+ pills missed in 2nd or 3rd week
same as missing 1 or 2 pills but use condom 1 wk
BC initiation and f/u
pelvic exam, pap, STI, f/u 2-3 mo and check BP if on estrogen, check IUD in 1 mo (^expulsion rate),
ST johns wort can affect
estrogen levels, reducing efficacy or causing breakthru bleeding
Estrogen -progestin complications
stroke, clot, htn, MI, cholestatic jaundice
4 fold risk of VTE (like when pregnant), overall risk is low
Injectable contraceptive complication
decreased bone mineral density if used >2yrs, recovers after d/c, consider calcium/vitamin D
IUD complication
PID, treat unless serious infection
uterine perforation
^risk of ectopic pregnancy
