Q

A group of people will go for a run. Half of them are going to eat burgers with fries 30
minutes before the race begins while the other group will eat burgers and fries two hours
prior to the race. The study will measure which group does best. What kind of experimental
designs is this? Why? What are some strengths about this research method? What are some
weaknesses of this research method?

A

Independent measures design because different participants take part in different conditions
of the study.
Strengths: No order effects, quickest and easiest way to allocate participants.
Weakness: Participant variables (individual differences) could still affect the dependent
variable. Different participants are needed for each condition which takes more time and
expense.

Q

50 plants will be distributed evenly between two conditions: Red light vs. Sunlight. The study
will measure which groups of plants will do better. What kind of experimental design is this?
Why?

A

Independent measures design because different participants take part in different conditions
of the study.

Q

A study wants to measure how cross country athletes perform while listening to music and
not listening to music. For the first tournament, they will be allowed to listen to music. For
the second tournament, they will not be allowed to listen to music. What experimental
design is this? Why?

A

Repeated measures designs because the same participants are used in each condition.

Q

What is one strength of repeated measures design?

A

The dependent variable will not be affected by participant variables.
It requires less participants than independent measures design or matched pairs design.

Q

What is one weakness of repeated measures designs?

A

Participants may guess the aim of the study and cause demand characteristics.
Order effects may affect the participants performance unless counterbalancing is used.

Q

A group of 10 participants will be tested on their sleeping habits. For the first trial, which
consists of 5 days, they will be asked to go to a sleeping lab and take a hot shower every day
before going to sleep. For the second trial, which consists of 5 days, they will be asked to
take a cold shower before going to sleep. What experimental design is this? Why?

A

Repeated measures designs because the same participants are used in each condition.

Q

A set of similar midfielders will be measured to see who’s better at passing. This will be Luka
Modric from Real Madrid and Kevin Debruyene from Manchester City. They will be tested
on short, long passing, and crossing. What experimental design is this? Why?

A

Matched pairs designs the participants that were paired in the conditions have similar
characteristics.

Q

What is one weakness of matched pair designs?

A

More expensive and time consuming than independent measures or repeated measures.
You cannot control all possible participant variables.
