Quiz # 1 Body Cavities and Associated Structures Flashcards
Posterior Cavity
(Dorsal Body Cavity) Made up of the Cranial Cavity and the Vertebral Canal

Cranial Cavity
Houses the Brain (Provides Cushion and Support)

Vertebral Canal
(Spinal Cavity) Cushions and supports the spine made up of bones from the vertebral column

Anterior Cavity
(Ventral Body Cavity)

Diaphram
(Anterior Body Cavity Component) Separates the thoracic cavity (Superior) from the abdominopelvic cavity (inferior)

Thoracic Cavity
“Chest Cavity” formed by the ribs, muscles of the chest, the sternum (breast bone), and the thoracic portion of the vertebral column
Visceral Pleura
Clings to the surface of the lungs
Parietal Pleura
lines the chest wall and covers the superior portion of the diaphragm
Mediastinum
Central portion of the thoracic cavity, between the two medial walls of the two pleurae and extends from the first rib to the diaphragm and sternum to the vertebral column.

Visceral Pericardium
Lines the heart (On the heart Surface)

Parietal Pericardium
Outer lining that lines the fibrous pericardium that lines the heart

Pericardial Cavity
Between the visceral and parietal cardium
Abdominopelvic cavity
Extends from the diaphragm to the groin, encircled by abdominal muscle wall and bones and muscles of the pelvis, two portions abdominal cavity and the inferior pelvic cavity

Visceral peritoneum
Lines the abdominal viscera

Parietal Peritoneum
Lines the abdominal wall and the inferior surface of the diaphragm

Peritoneal Cavity
Between the Visceral Peritoneum and the Parietal Peritoneum

Retroperitoneal Cavity
Posterior to the peritoneal cavity and either are not surrounded by the peritoneum or only slightly (Kidney, Ureter, adrenal glands, pancreas, duodenum of small intestine, ascending and descending colon of the large intestine, abdominal aorta, and inferior vena cava)

Oral cavity
contains all components of the mouth (teeth, tongue)
Nasal Cavity
Nose
Orbital Cavity
Eyes
Middle Ear Cavity
Auditory ossicles and middle ear
What protects the brain and spinal cord?
Three layers of protective tissue, the meninges, and a shock absorbing fluid protect and surround the brain and spinal cord.
What organs are housed in the mediastinum?
heart, trachea, esophagus, thymus, and large blood vessels that enter and leave the heart.
What Organs are housed in the abdominal cavity?
Kidneys, adrenal glands, stomach, spleen, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, small intestine, and most of the large intestine
What organs are housed in the pelvic cavity?
The urinary bladder, portions of the large intestine, and internal organs of the reproductive system.
Membrane
A thin Pliable tissue that covers, lines, partitions, or connects structures
Serous Membrane
a slippery double-layered membrane associated with body cavities that does not open directly to the exterior
What is the function of serous fluid?
Reduce friction between two layers allowing the viscera to slide freely during movements
Pleural Cavity
Between Visceral pleura and the parietal pleura
Pericardial Cavity
Layer between visceral pericardium and parietal pericardium filled with fluid.
Peritoneal Cavity
Serous fluid in between the visceral peritonium and the parietal paritonium
Intraperitoneal
Abdominal organs surrounded by peritoneum (stomach, spleen, liver, gallbladder, jejunum and ileum of the small intestine, cecum, appendix, and transverse colon of the large intestine
Synovial Cavity
cavities around joints. Synovial fluid present to aid in smooth movement
