Quick Revision Flashcards
Explain what is mean by moral evil and natural evil
Moral evil is suffering caused human actions deliberately or negligently.
Natural evil is suffering cause by events that have nothing to do with humans and which are to do with the ways of the world eg volcanoes earthquakes, drought
Describe what Christians believe about God and explain why evil causes a problem for this belief
Evil and suffering cause problems for those who believe in God believe he is benevolent, omnipotent and omniscient.
If he is ominbenevolent all loving would want to eliminate suffering.
If he is omniscient all knowing he must know what suffering would result from creating the world and know when suffering and evil will happen.
If he is omnipotent all powerful he must be able to prevent or eliminate suffering.
Explain how Catholics respond to suffering
They respond to suffering by prayer, asking God to help those who are suffering such as prayer is called intercession and is a feature of nearly every Christian act of worship
They could service, actively help tiles who are suffering such as hospitals and hospices, this is done in response to Jesus’ teaching in the parable of the Sheep and the Goats
Evil is created by humans, the is no such thing as the devil
Disagree:
The bible has told us their is a devil such as Jesus being tempted in the desert.
We are told in the book of Genesis that the devil tempts us in the form of a snake and because of that choice we have natural evil.
Human reaction to evil and suffering proves that evil is not always caused humans as it is an act without remorse and some people pray and do survive to help those in are in need.
Agree:
The devil is not a figure that can be proved, he is just a myth.
God gave us free will and some choose to do negative things.
We are born with original sin and this could cause us to do evil thing.
The devil is just an excuse.
Most suffering we experience in the world is a result of human evil through negligence.
Describe Cosmological argument for the existence of God
Everything I’d in motion, nothing can move itself, that’s can’t go back infinitely so there must be am unmoved mover that moves everything else. This is God.
Every event has a cause, nothing can be the cause of itself, this cannot go back initially, therefore there must be a first cause that is uncaused. This is God.
The unmoved mover and the uncaused cause brought the universe into being.
Describe the role of the Bishop in the Episcopacy in the Catholic Church
The bishops job into train and ordain priests and Dicons
Oversee the diocese, it’s finances and the spiritual guidance of the people in its parishes.
To confirm people in the faith.
To oversee Catholic education.
He writes pastoral letters and does visitations.
Why does the Catholic Church believe that the Pope is infallible certain circumstances
Jesus has given Peter the power to bind on earth what is to be bound in heaven, this authority given to Peter has been passed onto every pope. This means that in some causes the pope can teach infallibly, this mean that the pope cannot be in error when teaching about faith and morals.
This has to be a teaching for everyone.
Explain why is mean by apostolic succession and hat Jesus gave St. Peter the power to do
Jesus gave the first authority to be his representative on earth to the apostles, that authority is handed down to every apostle of Christ, the bishops and archbishops and the popes.
Explain the role of the Conscience Christian decision making
Catholics believe conscience is the voice of God speaking in our hearts, so it is informing us of the right and wrong thing to do in life and to do with God it helps us follow in Jesus footsteps. We inform our conscience by reading the bible, praying and taking to the elders in the church to ensure it is Gods voice.
Catholics should always obey the bishop agree or disagree
Agree
Conscience can be floud and influence by society.
It is better to trust the Christ’s representative on earth
Society changes and we need guidance on issues that the Bible is silent on and we need that guidance from a representative if Christ.
Disagree
If the bible is silent and if the church has interpreted the Bible to fit today’s society
In those circumstances a catholic must inform their conscience by reading the bible praying and talking to elders, if the voice of God says they do not need to obey they must follow that.
Christianity doesn’t need a Pope because it makes the pope distance from the people.
We can make do with a Bishop and he would be mire approachable
