Paper 1 Flashcards
What are the styles of Christian worship
Liturgical worship- set patter, Catholicism
Bible-centred worship- plan church, Methodist, focal point= lecture (word of God)
What is worship and how can it expressed
Worship is offering praise and thanks to God for all he has done for us, especially sending us the gift of his Son, Jesus Christ.
Expressions of worship are: Reading the bible, the word of God Singing Dance Prayer
What is private prayer and how is it expressed
Private prayer is individual or personal
People pray on their own, and anywhere and time, a simple ‘God help me’ is a prayer
When we say and try to put into practice the words of the ‘Our father’ we pray
Meditation- a way of praying using metal images to help a person grow closer to God
How is public prayer used in the community
When youngsters are taught to say the ‘Our father’ and the ‘Hail Mary’
When the community gather together to for prayer eg school assembly and prayer groups
Catholics believe the word of Jesus “when two or three are gathered together in my name, I am with you in your midst “
What do Catholics believe about prayer relating to communicating with God
It is not only talking to God but listening to the guidance that he gives
In prayer we can strengthen our relationship with god and show him praise and adoration for all he has done for us
In prayer we can show contrition by confessing for sins we have committed and we can as for forgiveness
Catholics can show thanksgiving, thanking God for all he has done
Catholics can ask God for whatever they need- supplication
They believe that God loves us all as a living parent and always wants the best for us, he will always listen to our prayers
What is pilgrimage and why do people on it
A pilgrimage is a journey to a holy place with a event in the life of Jesus or a Holy St
People go on pilgrimage to:
To take time out from everyday life to strengthen and deepen their faith and get closer to God
To say thank you for something good that has happened
To make up for something they have done wrong (penance)
To ask for help or healing
To show devotion to a particular St
Companionship/community with others to share faith and experiences
Why is Rome an important place for pilgrimage
The early leaders of the Christian church especially St Peter and St Paul were martyred there. The great church of St Peter is built over the tomb of St Peter.
To revive a blessing from the the representative bishop of Rome, St Peters successor the Pope
What activities would pilgrims undertake in Rome
Visited the four churches of Rome, St Peter, St Mary Major, St John Lectern and St Paul-outside-the-Walls
Visit St Peter where they may be fortunate enough to have a general audience with the pope where he might give them a blessing
Visit catacombs- underground burial place, where early Christians gathered to celebrate Mass and the sacrament, where early important St are buried
Visit the coliseum, a great amphitheatre where the Romans held the games and during which many Christians were martyred
On pilgrimage to Lourdes what activities might a Catholic take place in
The sick are prayed for and taken to bath in water from the spring
The blessed sacrament procession, a monstrance carting the blessed sacrament is carried by a priest, the sacrament is followed by by a group of priests who celebrate the right. The procession end at the underground Basilica.
The torchlight procession takes place outside the Grotto, follows the rout if the blessed sacrament, each participant will carry a candle, the focus of this procession is the rosary. The Lourdes hymn is song, there is the final blessing and then signs of peace are exchanged
What is mean by the mass as sacrifice
It is a offering to God. For Catholics Jesus was offered in sacrifice to God on Good Friday when he died on the cross. Jesus death in the cross happened one and for all and can never be repeated. Christ cannot die again. However Catholic Christians believe that though the power if the holy sprit the merites of Jesus sacrifice are made present during the celebration of everyday mass
What is the real presence
Jesus is really present in the mass in many ways, in the gathering of the people in the church, in the person of the priest and in the word of God. In the consecration bread and wine for Catholics believe that through the consecration prayer the brad and wine are transubstantiated into the body and the blood of Jesus Christ
Sunday is a holy day if obligation, what should Catholics do and why
Sunday is the sabbath day, god created the works in 6 days and rested in the 7th. Catholics rest on the Sunday because Jesus rose from the dead on Eater Sunday.
On Sundays Catholics should:
Go to Church to celebrate the mass with the community
Refrain from unnecessary work and enjoy a day of rest and recreation
Practice good works such as visiting the elderly and spending time with family
Because
Jesus commanded his followers to remember him, he said ‘do this in memory of me’
Catholics believe that during the mass Jesus is truly present under the form if bread and wine
Catholics believe that in the mass Jesus’ perfect sacrifice on the cross is made present today and continues to save people today
Communication with Jesus in the mass helps people to develop their relationship with God because of the the mass is a sacrament
During the mass we experience in word and sacrament Gods love for us and we have the duty to extend that love to the people we need in our daily lives
Dis five the main features of a Catholic Church
The altar is made of stone or wooden or metal table. It is placed at the freak point of the church, front, it is where the sacrifice of Jesus is takes place.
The crucifix is made of wood, Jesus is shown on the cross, it is normally above the alter.
The tabernacle is a gold or metal box that houses the unused host.
The lectern is a book stand, which the lectionaries is placed and the word of God is read during the, Mass. It is usually the front to the right of the alter.
The baptismal font is a basin, usually on a column of wood or stone, which contains water used in the celebration of baptism, usually found to the left of the alter.
Why is it Catholic duty to care for others
The Catholic Church teaches us that all people are sons and daughters of a common cater who loves us all and wants his followers to love and care for each other
Jesus taught us that we should ‘love one another’
Jesus taught is that grates command ‘love God and love your neighbour’
In parables such as the sheep and the goats (Matthew 25:31-46) and the Rich Man and Lazarus (Luke 16:19-31) he reveals that we will be the judge on the way we have responded to the need of others
Jesus teaches us that we can Live The Mass today
By acts of kindness and helpfulness Using our gifts and talents in the service of others By rejecting prejudice By forgiving those who have done wrong By showing compassion to those in need By works of charity By praying for the whole church
What does Pentecost represent
The birthday of the church. The Christian Church was ‘born’ when the apostles of Jesus were empowered by the gift of the Holy Sprit to go out and preach the good news.
