Check for -fraying -cracking -wear -tension (Proper tension midway between belts will deflect the belt)

Check the daily log to see if fluids have been added recently.

Possible check engine light reasons
Low coolant, high oil temp, high coolant temp, low oil pressure, sensor malfunction, or apparatus not plugged into shoreline for extended periods of time.

Fuel tank capacity

Recommend filling fuel tank every day to reduce fuel condensation and to avoid running out of fuel at a fire scene.
Coolant gauge normal temp
180-220 degrees Fahrenheit
High temp possible causes are low coolant, overuse of retarder, belt shaft not driving fan properly, radiator plugged with dirt and debris
Engine oil PSI
Normal 15-80 PSI cold or high idle, 5-60 hot at idle
Volt gauge
Indicates battery condition and voltage output
Normal reading 13.5-14.8
Low reading possible causes
Loose or missing bolts, low state of battery charge, current load on system greater than alternator can produce, or defective alternator.
Call fire maintenance if alternator is not charging

What does the load manager do?
Sequentially energizes and de-energizes relays at half-second intervals in order to reduce spikes in a vehicle’s electrical system. Also detects when the vehicle’s load is greater than the output of the alternator. When this occurs, loads are sequentially de- energized until the alternator output is equal to the load. KEEP ON AT ALL TIMES
Airline filter on some ladder trucks
Some ladder trucks are equipped with an airline filter assembly next to the large breathing air storage tanks. This filter is equipped for 125 psi max.
Ideally, pressure should be set at under 125 psi. All the air needed at the bucket is 100 psi
Pressure Governor-throttle mode
When the parking brake is set and the transmission is in neutral position, it is possible to increase the RPMs of the engine. Each movement will increase the RPMs by increments of 25

When in pressure mode, each movement of the switch will increase the PDP by 4 PSI
Pressure Governor-Pump
The system shutdown button must be pushed for 1-2 seconds prior to switching transmission out of pump gear
Pressure Governor-system shutdown
Push button down to shut down governor to idle. When operating in high water flow operations, the pressure should be gradually reduced prior to shutting down the system, when possible.
Raising cab
Always use stay arms before working on apparatus. Do not rest the entire weight of the cab on the stay arm. If possible, place control lever to raise position to hydraulically lock.
How does the retarder slow the vehicle?
The retarder uses viscous property of the transmission fluid to retard the driveline. When activated, transmission fluid is introduced into the retarder housing and energy is introduced into the fluid through the opposing action of the spinning vanes. This retards the vehicle through the rear wheels and adds heat to the transmission fluid. This heat is dissipated through the transmission cooler and radiator.
How much braking does the retarder apply?
Quantum are configured at 33% and 67% braking. The retarder is applied to 1/3rd of it’s capacity when the throttle pedal is released. It is then applied to it’s full capacity when the brake pedal is depressed.
When should the retarder be turned off?
Wet weather
PSI required to activate steps?
85 PSI. The steps operate with air from the wet tank of the air brake system.
Transmission Info
Allison automatic Dexron ATF or TransSynd cold check 60-120 degrees F hot check 160-200 degrees F (should always be checked in hot mode)
Transmission Fluid Check Procedure
- Park on level surface
- shift to neutral and apply parking brake
- shift to drive, then to reverse. shift back to neutral and let engine idle for 2 minutes
- wipe dipstick clean and then check.
If fluid is too high, the fluid can aerate. This will cause the transmission to shift erratically or overheat.
