Q

Study Figure 2 - Describe the growth of the world’s population:

A

up to 1650: No big increase in population.

from 1650 to 1900: The population started to increase in the 1800’s with the industrial and agricultural revolutions in Europe and North America (technological advances in food production, distribution and exchange for industrial goods) and kept increasing even faster in 1900 with the revolutions in medicine and sanitation (many diseases eliminated or reduced).

from 1900 to 1996: A major increase in population started in the 1900s with the green revolution (development of new varieties of cereals such as rice, wheat and maize → food production icreased in many countries).

Q

Using your knowledge of natural increase, birth rate and death rate, explain the changes in the growth rate.

A

The increase in growth rate starting in the 1900s is mainly due to the different revolutins taking place - the green revolution, the industrial and agricultural revolution and the revolution in medicine. These revolutions have contributed to a decreased death rate (easier ways to survive, better healthcare etc) and in that way the natural increase has increased since natural increase = birth rate - death rate.

Q

Study Figure 1 - How will this distribution affect food supply and global markets for manufactured goods?

A

On the global market the asian countries will probably become even bigger on manufacturing goods as well as supplying food, since that’s where 57% of the world population are calcuwill live. However, the food supply will probably also become an even greater problem, this is because today, the developed world corresponds to 32% of the world population, and here almost no one’s suffering from lack of food supply. But in 2025 the developed world’s percentage is calculated to go down to 16% - and both Asia and Africa is calculated to increase - where the major problems of starving and lack of food are.
