Questions Flashcards
Example of anticipating issues
EM work: I stayed up to date with international events, literature and laws.
Because of this I was able to anticipate trends with EM guns (uses, parts) and detected a future problem with digital blueprints for weapons.
This allowed me to present potential approaches for future proposals.
For example, I suggested we consider making it illegal to hold digital blueprints for firearms. This is because we cannot regulate their parts. I also saw this approach used in Singapore.
Crime theory analysis
Deprivation theory:
absence of a guardian:
Analytical thinking skills
GDC - Gambling venue policy
Observation - despite current policy, Gisborne had a gambling problem
research and data analysis - gambling revenue was increasing and the city had no gambling support networks
looked at why it was increasing, other councils approaches, international research
creative and critical thinking - ways to solve this problem, yes legislation but also outside the box
communication - presented context, findings, options, and analysis to council
Providing advice to decision makers
GDC - gambling venue policy
Sourced data on gambling in gisborne.
Identified trend of increasing harm from gambling in the community.
reviewed literature, other councils, and legislation
had few levers to pull but consulted with Council and knew their strategic objective was ‘a pokie free Tairawhiti’
with this in mind I presented options such as restricting clauses under legislation, alongside ‘outside the box’ options;
lobbying to central government for more control
considering an ethics policy
Provided data, pros and cons to ensure Council were fully informed
Preparing analytical products
Rec24: Literature review? Risk and opportunity analysis? Summarising relevant documents?
• Able to recognise problems, distil and define the pertinent issues, and determine and propose effective solutions
Rec 24
Problem: Police not receiving all info to ensure public safety. Threshold for s92 too high.
effective solutions: mandatory or discretionary. weighed risks and opportunities for each (less ambiguity for health practitioners Mand, less impact on patient relationship Discre).
Conclusion is we want a low threshold to ensure police capture info on risks to the public and individual
can narrow who reports, what type of injury is reported
Prioritisation example
Briefing
communicated to team this would take priority
ensured other members involved had my support
confirmed what was required of me
