questionnaires and interviews Flashcards
what is a questionnaire
self report written method of gaining data from pts that do not necessarily require the precence of a researcher, collect large amounts of info on a persons belief, thoughts, feelings, and attitudes, open or closed questions
evaluate the use of questionnaires
+ increase validity as same questions to all respondants, researcher bias can be removed
- closed questions can restrict answers and may not collect real valid data
+ can be repeated to check validity
- issues with validity of responses as they could be affected by social desirability bias
+ obtain large amounts of standardised data quickly and conveniently
- sample bias as only certain types of people fill them in
how can you check reliability
test retest - same people given same questions on a different occassion
split half- split questions in hald comparing findings of both of them
what is an interview
face to face questioning
what are the types of interviews
structured - fixed questions, same wording
unstructured- certain topics but no fixed questions
semi structured - some fixed questions but can deviate to explore in more detail
evaluate the use of interviews
+ can be explained, issues can be explored by asking further questions
- researcher bias, influence answers
+ obtain depth and detailed data, more likely to be valid as not restricted
- social desirability bias, feel they cannot be honest through fear of judgement
- hard to replicate to test relability
