Q

what are the strengths of burger

A

+ 70 men and women from range of backgrounds and ethnicities, wide range of people should respond the same
+ ethical guidelines followed, 2 step screening, told 3x they could withdraw, 15 V sample shock, told straight away learner recieved no shocks, clinical psychologist looking for signs of distress
+ extremely detailed, ppts had the same experience and screening, good reliability
+ higher internal validity, lab conditions, experimenter had control, no knowlegde of Milgram

Q

what are the weaknesses of burger

A
  • western based, collectivist cultures may respond differently, 38% excluded so final sample may have been psycholgically robust
  • lacks ecological validity, Santa Clara Uni, task of shocking, behaviour may be artififcial
  • Elms claimed it tells little about real world obedience so lacks application, ppts stopped before any real tension or cognitive confusion, reduces meaningfullness
