question 3 Flashcards
what is alienation
is when people feel disconnected from their work, themselves and others
marx argued that capitalism causes alienation by making workers feel powerless and unfulfilled
Alienation from the product of labor
Workers don’t own what they create; it belongs to the employer. They make products they may never use or see again.
Alienation from the process of labor
Work is repetitive, controlled by the employer, and lacks creativity or personal meaning.
Alienation from self (or humanity)
People feel like machines, doing tasks just to survive instead of expressing themselves.
Alienation from others
Workers compete for jobs and wages, instead of working together, leading to isolation.
is it relevent today
Yes! Many workers today feel unfulfilled, overworked, and disconnected. People work long hours in jobs they don’t enjoy, have little control over their tasks, and often struggle to find meaning in their work. Automation and corporate control also make jobs feel less personal. Social media even adds a new kind of alienation, making people feel connected online but lonely in real life.
