What is a secondary spontaneous pneumothorax (SSP)?
Secondary spontaneous pneumothorax (SSP) is a medical emergency where the lung collapses in the presence of underlying chronic lung disease.
What are coryzal symptoms?
Popular term for a virus infection involving the upper respiratory tract and characterized by congestion of the mucosa, watery nasal discharge, and general malaise, with a duration of 3-5 days.
Discuss Samter’s Triad aka Aspirin-exacerbated disease (AERD)
Samter’s Triad refers to three conditions which commonly cluster together - asthma, nasal polyps and aspirin sensitivity (sometimes known as AERD).
Very classical for patients in asthma to have worsening symptoms following aspirin/NSAIDs and beta blockers and great care should be taken when administering meds
What inhaler can cause oral thrush?
Sore throat, white patches on back of throat

What criteria is required to discharge a patient home from hospital following an asthma attack?
Must be stable on their regular asthma regime for 24 hours
Treatment in hospital following an acute exacerbation of asthma (ie wheeze, chest tightness and difficulty breathing)
40-50mg prednisolone for 5 or more days
What criteria would suggest urgent need for intubation and ventilation in a patient with an acute exacerbation of asthma?
Normal PaCO2
4.6 - 6.0kPa
What medication should be given to asthmatic patients who are using their reliever inhaler but not their maintenance inhaler?
Prescribe an ICS such as beclometasone diproprionate 200micrograms BD
What indicates respiratory acidosis?
pH < 7.35
Raised pCO2
What does bicarbonate in the normal level indicate?
There is no metabolic compensation
