Parts of Speech:
Definition of a Noun?
A person, place, or thing.

Definition of a Verb?
Action or state of being.

Describes how verb is done.

Definition of a Adjective?
Describes a noun.
Sentences Types:
What is a “Simple” sentence?
A simple sentence includes a subject and verb, complete thought.
Sentences Types:
What is a “Compound” sentence?
A compound sentence includes two sentences (independent) joined by a coordinating conjunction.
Sentences Types:
What is a “Complex” sentence?
A complex sentence is when a independent clause + dependent clause are together.
Clauses:
What is an “Independent Clause?”
An independent clause CAN stand alone as a complete sentence; subject/verb predicate. (Ex. I went to the library)
Conjunctions:
What is an “Coordinating conjunction?”
A coordinating conjunction joins two independent clauses (I,cc I).
FANBOYS: for, and, nor, but, or yet, so
Clauses:
What is an “Dependent Clause?”
A dependent clause CAN’T stand alone as a complete sentence due to a subordinating conjunction (Ex. Since I went to the library)
Conjunctions:
What is an “Subordinating conjunction?”
A subordinating conjunction creates a dependent clause (D,I).
Ex. After, during, while, since, if, because, when, although, though, etc.
Sentence Errors:
What is a “Fragment?”
A fragment looks like a sentence but is incomplete. Missing subject or verb, or is a dependent clause.
(Ex. Having left on time
or Since you were late)
Sentence Errors:
What is a “Run on?”
Two independent clauses without punctuation/conjunctions to join them together or comma splice.
(Ex. I needed a book I went to the library).
Sentence Errors:
What is a “Comma Splice?”
(Hint: Can be corrected with I, cc I or I.I. or I;I)
Two independent clauses incorrectly joined by a comma
(Ex: I needed a book, I went to the library.)
