Quarks Flashcards
What are quarks?
They are the building blocks for hydrons
what are the two type of quarks you need to make a proton and neutrons?
up and down quark
What is the strange quark used for
lets you make particles with a property called strangeness
When is strangeness conserved?
Only some of the time, in the strong interaction
What is an example of a strange particle?
Kaon, these are created via strong interaction but decay in the weak interaction
How are strange particles produced?
They are produced in pairs, one has a strangeness of +1 and one has a strangeness of -1 therefor the overall strangeness is 0 so its conserved.
How many quarks are baryons made up of?
3 quarks
What is the quark structure for a proton?
uud
what is the quark structure for a neutron?
udd
What are pions made up off?
up, down, anti-up and anti-down particles
What are four properties which are conserved in particle interaction?
charge, baryon number, strangeness, conservation of lepton number
When a weak interaction occurs what happens to the quark structure?
The quark structure changes for instance if a neutron decays into a proton the structure will go from udd to uud
