Particles and antiparticles Flashcards
What are photons?
Photons are discrete energy packets
What is the order of the electromagnetic spectrum?
(increasing in frequency)
radiowaves, microwaves, infrared, visiblelight, ultraviolet, x rays, gammarays
What is the equation that links wavelength and frequency?
f = c/λ
what is C (speed of light)
3.00 x 10^8
What does the energy of a photon depend on and whats the equation?
the energy of a photon depends on the frequency of the radiation the equation supporting this is
E = hf = hc/λ
What do particles and anti-particles have in common and whats different?
they share the same rest energy and mass however have opposite charges
What is the formula for the rest energy?
E = mc^2
What happens when energy is converted into mass?
You get an equal amount on matter and anti-matter
What is pair production?
Pair production is the process of firing two protons at each other at high speeds youll end up with lots of energy at the point of impact and this energy may be converted into more particles, however there is a chance for an extra proton along side an anti proton.
When does pair production happen?
When a photon has enough energy to produce enough mass
What type of photons have enough energy?
only gamma ray photons have enough energy for pair production
What is annihilation?
when a particle meet its corresponding particle all masses of the particle and anti particle gets converted back into energy
