Classification of Particles Flashcards
What are Hadrons?
Hadrons are particles that feel the strong nuclear force
What are hadrons made up of?
Hadrons are made up off quarks
What are the two type of hadrons?
Baryons and Mesons
What are two examples of baryons?
protons and neutrons
What is the only stable baryon?
A proton
What do unstable baryons decay into?
A proton
What are baryons?
Baryons are a quantum number which must be conserved in any interaction meaning it must have a certain set of value
What is the number of baryons in an interaction called?
The baryon number
What is the baryon number for the proton and neutron?
B = +1
What is the baryon number for Antibaryons
B = -1
What is the baryon number for other particles which are not baryons or Antibaryons?
B = 0
What must the baryon number be on either side of the interaction in order to predict if the interaction is going to happen
The baryon number has to be the same
does the total baryon number change in any particle interaction?
the total baryon number in any particle interaction never changes
What type of baryons are neutrons?
Neutrons are baryons that decay into protons through beta minus decay and form an electron and antineutrino
What are mesons?
Mesons are another type of hadron and are unstable and have a baryon number of B = 0
What are the two type of mesons?
Pions and Kaons
What is a pion?
Pions are the lightest meson there are three charges pi +, pi neutral, and pi negative. pion give you allot of high energy particle collisions
What is a Kaon ?
Kaons are the heaviest and unstable pion, you get 2 electric charges k+ and k neutral, they have a short lifetime and decay into pions
How was both kaons and pions discovered?
in cosmin rays
how do mesons interact with baryons?
They interact via strong nuclear force
What are leptons?
Leptons don’t feel the strong nuclear force
How so leptons interact with other particles?
They interact via weak interactions
What are the two types of leptons?
Electrons and Muons
What is the only stable lepton?
Electron
What is the only unstable lepton?
Muon, these decay into electrons
What do electrons and muons come with?
Electrons and muons come with their own neutrinos
What is the mass and charge of a neutrino?
The mass and charge of a neutrino is 0
What is the number of leptons called?
The lepton number
