Quantitive Chemistry Flashcards
What is the conservation of mass?
When the total mass of the reactants is the same as the total mass of products.
What is the relative formula mass of a compound?
The sum of the relative formula masses of all the numbers shown in the formula.
Why might some reactions have a change in mass and appear to not conform to the law of the conservation of mass?
The reaction did not take place in a closed system and some reactants or products may have been lost to the environment.
What is a mole (mol)?
The measure of the number of particles (atoms, ions or molecules) contained in a substance.
How many particles does one mole of substance contain?
6.02 x 10^23
What is the Avogadro constant?
6.02 x 10^23
What is the formula to calculate the number of moles in a given mass of a substance?
amount (mol) = (mass of substance (g)) / (atomic (or formula) mass (g/mol))
What is a limiting reactant?
When two chemical react together and one chemical is completely used up, therefore stopping the reaction. This absent chemical is this.
How may a concentration of a solution be given?
The mass of solute per given volume of solution.
What is the other chemical called in a reaction with a limiting reactant?
Excess.
