Energy Changes Flashcards
What happens in exothermic reactions?
Energy is transferred to the surroundings in the form of heat.
What happens in endothermic reactions?
Energy/heat is transferred from the environment and into the chemicals.
What are some examples of exothermic reactions?
Self heating cans, hand warmers, combustion, neutralisation.
What are some examples of endothermic reactions?
Sports injury pack/cold compress, thermal decomposition.
What happens in a reversible reaction?
If it is exothermic one way, it will be endothermic the other and likewise.
What happens in chemical reactions?
Bonds are broken and formed.
How are bonds broken in a chemical reaction?
Particles must collide together with sufficient energy.
What is the minimum amount of energy for a reaction to take place called?
Activation energy.
What is another name for a reaction profile?
Energy profile diagram.
What do catalysts do?
Reduce the activation energy needed for a reaction by providing an alternate pathway.
What process is breaking a bond?
endothermic
What process is forming a bond?
exothermic
