Quality Control For Woven Fabric Flashcards
Fabric count + sett:
Describe a square cloth
Describe an un-square cloth
Square: same size yarn, same no. Of threads used in both warp and weft
Un-square: either unequal no. Of yarns per inch or different yarn sizes used in both warp and weft
Fabric count + sett:
How many ends and picks are in a high count cloth?
How many in a low count cloth?
High count: 90 ends/cm 80 picks/cm
Low count: 20 ends/cm 15 picks/cm
Name six factors to consider before cutting woven fabric:
- Dimensional stability
- The grain of a cloth
- Matching of patterned or pile fabrics
- Seam slippage
- Fabric stretch
- Compatibility of layers
What’s the best way to cut fabric?
When the fabric is flat, relaxed, straight
Describe a lengthwise grain:
Runs the length of fabric parallel to selvedge
Describe a crosswise grain:
Runs perpendicular to selvage of fabric
Describe bias grain:
Line is a 45 degree angle to the lengthwise and crosswise grain.
What effects can happen to woven fabrics if the weft is not square?
- bowed effect
- skewed effect
Seam splippage is more prevalent when: (4)
- Man made fibres/ yarn used
- smooth surface
- lower sett
- long floats
Why should woven fabrics be tested? (3)
- to ensure fabrics preform to their intended use
- to protect the consumer
- to protect manufacturer
What areas of woven fabrics are tested?
- protection (eg flammability)
- appearance (pilling)
- physical mechanical (stretch)
- comfort (compressibility)
Name 4 fabric flaws
Broken ends
Broken picks
Skewed fabric
Un-square weft
