Performance Indicators Flashcards
What is woven fabric cover?
The ability of fibres or yarns to occupy and area when woven
What is geometric cover?
The quality of fibre needed to make a yarn which will cover a specific area (bulk)
What is visual cover?
The ability of yarns or fibres to hide what’s underneath it (opacity)
What is cover factor?
Represents the tightness of a fabric, governed by yarn count / yarn density
What does fabric texture describe?
The surface differences of fabrics (tactile and visual)
I.e fine or course, smooth or rough, etc
What is drape?
The ability of a fabric to fall under its own weight into wavy folds of different nature.
What is handle?
What is subjective handle?
- hand provides a tactile sensation while touching fabric
- subjective: sensation of touch or feel
What are the two systems of objective handle?
Kawabata- FAST
Tensile and shear- surface, bending, compression testers.
How is absorbency of a fabric determined? (4)
- determined by fibres used
- yarn property
- fabric weave
- finishing process
What are three quality’s of a good absorbent fabric?
- Comfortable to wear
- discourage pilling and static electricity build up
- easy to clean
What is abrasion resistance?
Ability to wear and deterioration caused by surface friction during use
What is air permeability and what factors create to good air permeability?
-the ability of air to pass through fabric
- high yarn twist
- loose weave structure
- low cover factor
What is compressibility?
-what factors lead to good compressibility
-Reflects how a fabric can be compressed and regain its original position
- type of fibre
- Resilience / bulk of yarn
- woven structure
- thickness
What is dimensional stability?
What factors lead to good DS?
-The ability of a fabric to maintain original dimension upon use
- fibre material
- sett
- structure
- shrinkage finishing
What is elasticity?
-the ability of stretched material to return to its original size
