constructivism
ontology : relativist
epistomology : subjectivist
transformative
-research has an agenda to advocate for marganalized peoples
-focus on reform and change through research (not just as a result of research)
-researchers and participants work together to create meaningful change for the participants
sources of data : typically qualitative
qualitative data generated through
interviews
observations (words)
diaries and documents
images, drawings, photos
open ended questionnaires/surveys (words)
qualitative research designs
- case study
- grounded theory
- phenomenology
- ethnography
- narrative and life stories
- community based research
- content and thematic analyses
case study
-commonly used to gain an in-depth understanding of a particular case (eg. success team - why?)
-use interviews and sometimes observations
-identify “bounded case” to define your sample/parameters
grounded theory
to develop a theory about a process
-ultimate goal is to explain how something occurs with a theoretical model
-theory can be end point to qualitative work
phenomenology
to develop a deep understanding of an experience
eg. adversity or loss of identity
ethnography
purpose is for the researcher to immerse themselves within a community
-direct and sustained contact with human beings in the context of their daily lives over a prolonged period of time
-researcher seeks to understand the culture from the perspective of the cultures group members
ethnography
3 methods of data collection
participant observation — informal conversations—– field notes
life stories and narratives
used often interchangeably with “story” -> this is contested
story-> tales people tell
narrative-> dimensions/properties of stories eg. sequence, structure, thematic content , consequences, tellability, temporality
people tell stories; tesearchers analyze the porperties of these stories

-content analysis
-thematic analysis
