qualitative methods Flashcards
What are the 4 worldviews?
Postpositivism ; construcivism ; transformative ; pragmatism
Why use qualitative research?
Qualitative research seeks to document individual perspectives, experiences, thoughts and behaviours – some of these can’t necessarily be in a normal distribution (i.e can’t be quantified); qualitative research can be used to explore the needs of a certain community or ethnic group; some things can’t be quantified; allows for a complex understanding of an issue; may tackle a sensitive research topic; uses transformative worldviews (i.e emphasis on activism and transformation).
What is methodology?
Methodology is the package of approaches, processes and plans to hypothesizing, collecting, analyzing and clarifying data. It’s an overarching umbrella of approaches
What is methods?
Methods are the different data collection strategies that may be employed in a research study.
What are some methods for data collection in qualitative research?
Body mapping, diaries, focus groups, interviews, participant observation, photovoice.
What type of sampling is used in qualitative research?
Purposive sampling is typically used.
What is purposive sampling?
Biased sampling technique in which only certain kinds of people are included in a sample. Purposive sampling seeks information-rich cases that are able to provide individual perspectives and experiences that are relevant to the research question. It achieves depth and breadth.
Purposive sampling achieves ____?
Depth – seek out specific individuals with specific experiences.
What are the most common types of purposive sampling in qualitative research?
Heterogenous/maximum variation : Recruiting participants who can provide distinct perspectives and experiences.
Homogenous : Recruiting participants who are able to provide similar perspectives and experiences
Snowball : Consenting participants provide the researchers with connections to others who may be eligible and interested in participating in the qualitative study.
Probability sampling achieves ____?
Breadth – good for external validity
In an analysis, what does it mean to “code” qualitative data?
A code is a word or short phrase that symbolically assigns a summative, salient, essence-capturing and evocative attribute for a portion of language of visual data.
True or False : Codes can not be collapsed into larger themes.
False
Provide some research questions that would be qualitative.

- How beneficial is the program for each individual?
- How do people experience programs such as AA?
- What are some of the barriers to attending meetings like AA?
- What were the experiences that led them to join AA?
