Supervisory responsibilities
A
- immediately evaluate necessity of the pursuit based on totality of circumstances
- ensure that only the necessary numbers of pursuing vehicles are involved
- ensure that local agencies have been notified
- continually evaluate the need to continue pursuit

When can we pursue?
A
1) reason to believe suspect is committing or is wanted for a violent felony person crime, DV, or pose a significant threat of death or serious physical injury to another
2) reported or observed driving prior to police contact suggests suspect represents a significant and continuing danger of death or serious physical injury

Governmental interest-
A
- threat to the public
- A pursuit will be terminated if the officer or supervisor believes the risk of the pursuit outweighs the benefit of immediate apprehension
- always evaluate necessity to pursue

Pursuit halting techniques?
A
-No TVI since we haven’t trained adequately
- Pinning
- Channeling
- Ramming
- Spike strips

Spike strips
A
- Only deployed by those trained, and must meet our pursuit policy standards
- Not for m/c, school buses, vehicles designed to haul 16+, or transport hazardous materials
- can be deployed when other agencies are pursuing and doesn’t meet policy to pursue. Radio contact is required for deployment in AOA situations
- Preemptive deployment is only allowed in situations where if the vehicle were to flee it meets requirements for pursuit.
- constant communication
- marked veh should be available to pursue after deployment
- immediately retrieved
- AAR must be completed by supervisor and sent up chain of command
