What justifies a vehicle pursuit
When immediate apprehension outweighs the level of danger to the community created by the pursuit.
Caravanning
A continuous line of three or more police vehicles engaged in a pursuit, which is prohibited.
Following
Trailing a pursuit at a safe speed and distance with the intention of assisting at the point of arrest.
How many MVPD officers may be directly involved in a pursuit
Only the primary Officer involved and one secondary unit.
Considerations when initiating, continuing or terminating a pursuit
▪Seriousness of crime ▪Relationship to community safety▪safety to officers▪time of day▪volume of vehicle and pedestrian traffic▪location ▪weather▪road conditions ▪familiarity with area▪speeds involved▪radio communication ▪capability of Police vehicle▪if identity of violator is known
Priority 1 response
Felony in progress (except automatic alarms) injury accident, medical emergency, officers call for help. May respond with lights and siren as quickly as is safely possible within statutory requirements.
Priority 2 response
Misdemeanor in progress, automatic alarms. May respond with lights and siren when necessary, but will not exceed safe speeds nor proceed through regulated stop without first coming to a complete halt.
Priority 3 response
A call for service not listed in priority 1 or 2. Will respond without lights or siren and in compliance with all traffic regulations.
