Purity & Formulations Flashcards
What do pure substances consist of?
Only one element / compound
What is a formulation?
A useful mixture with a precise purpose made by a following a formula.
What are some examples of formulations?
Fuels, cleaning products, paints, medicines
What are the two phases of chromatography?
A mobile phase and a stationary phase.
What is an Rf value?
The ratio between the distance travelled by a dissolved substance and the distance travelled by the solvent.
What is the Equation for calculating the Rf value?
Rf = distance travelled by substance / distance travelled by solvent
What is Limewater?
An aqueous solution of calcium hydroxide.
What is a method for testing if a substance is pure?
Heating until a melting or boiling point is met, a pure substance will have a very specific temp.
