Gas Tests Flashcards
How do you test for Chlorine?
chlorine bleaches litmus paper, turning it white - this is because a solution of chlorine is acidic.
How do you test for Oxygen?
Putting a glowing splint inside a test tube containing oxygen, the oxygen will relight the glowing splint.
How do you test for Carbon Dioxide?
Bubbling CO2 through limewater (aquatics solution of calcium hydroxide). This causes the reaction to turn cloudy.
How do you test for Hydrogen?
Holding a lit splint at the open end of the test tube containing hydrogen, you’ll hear a ‘squeaky pop.’
Why does the test for Hydrogen produce a ‘squeaky pop?’
The noise comes from the hydrogen burning quickly with the oxygen in the air to form H2O.
