Q

How can we help to clean water that has been polluted by larger items?

A

By recycling waste

Every individual and organisation should take responsibility

Methods to remove waste from rivers by:

  • Using gauze / wire netting to filter large objects
  • Sort large items by hand for recycling

Q

After large items have been removed what should we do next?

A

Water should be PURIFIED FROM CONTAMINATION that makes it undrinkable.

The type of impurity dissolved in the water will determine what method will by used

Q

Explain Carbon Filters with Pro’s & Con’s

A

Carbon removes impurities by filtering water though carbon:

PRO’S

* Remove pesticides & chlorine

* Cheap

CON’S

* Not kill Bacteria

* Not long lasting effect

Q

Explain Ceramic Filters:

A

Ceramic Filters work same as carbon filters. The pores in the ceramic removes impurities when filtered.

PRO’S

* Removes parasites

* Easy to clean

CON’S

* Does not Work with pesticides

* Does not Work with organic pollutants

Q

Discuss Ozone as a filter

A

Ozone is 3 oxygen atoms ( O3). When this gas bubbles through water it purifies water.

PRO’S

* Kills bacteria, viruses, algea

and parasites

CON’S

* Does not remove heavy metal, minerals & pesticides

* Very Expensive

Q

Explain how Ultra Violet light works as filters

A

When bacteria and viruses are exposed to ultraviolet light the organisms will not survive.

PRO’S

* Kills bacteria & viruses

CON’S

* Does not kill all organisms

* Does not work on heavy metals

Q

Explain how Reverse Osmosis water purify

A

Water is forced through a semi-permeable synthetic membrane.

PRO’S

* Remove 90-98% of heavy metals, viruses, bacteria &

organisms

CON’S

must use carbon filter to clean

* Waste lots water

* Does not remove minerals

* Membrane degrade

* Breeding place for bacteria,

Q

What filter gives the cleanest water and explain?

A

Distallation is very simple. Water is heated until it boils and turns to steam that condenses and it’s collected. All the impurities stay behind in container.

PRO’S

*Cleanest method, all impurities are removed

CON’S

* Slow process

* Energy use is high

* Minerals are lost like, calcium, magnesium and floride

* Very expensive
