MATTER AND MATERIALS Flashcards
What is MATTER?
Matter can be a solid, liquid or gas By adding or reducing heat energy the substance can change from one state to another
Explain a SOLID
* Particles densely packed and fused together * Has a particular shape and volume * Movement (vibration) so small cannot be detected
Explain Liquid
* Particles densely packed but move around * DO NOT have a shape but HAVE volume * Take shape of container * More movement than a solid
Explain Gas
* Particles are far apart - move freely * Do not have shape or volume * Particles has high energy and move quickly and constantly
What is dry ice?
Dry ice is frozen carbon dioxide Temperature of 78 * C Turns into gas when exposed to heat
What is sublimation
When a solid turns DIRECTLY into gas when exposed to heat energy.
What is plasma?
* Plasma is ionised gas. * The atom is stripped of electrons and has positive charge. * These atoms react to electromagnetic fields * Does not occur in nature, except the Northern lights
What energy is needed to change the state of a matter?
HEAT Energy
Name a natural and synthetic matter
Wood and Plastic
Name 4 properties to classify materials
* solid * gas * liquid * plasma
the temp at which a liquid boils and turns to gas
boiling point - 100 *C
when solid turns into a liquid
melting (ice - 0*C)
when a liquid turns into a solid
freezing
