MIXTURES: Solutions, Suspensions & Colloids Flashcards
What is a mixture
2 or more substances mixed together but not chemically bonded
What is a simple mixture?
mixture of larger particles, easly seperated by hand sorting eg. beans, smarties
mixtures can be classified as ?
* sulutions
* suspensions
* colloid
what is a solution
is a mixture where one substans is absorbed into another becomes one eg sugar water (homogenous)
what is a suspension
mixture where particles are to large to be absorbed by other substance - easily seperated eg water and sand (heterogenous)
what is a colloid
a mixture where substances are evenly distrubuted but not absorbed by one another eg water and mayo
List 3 differences between colloids and solutions
Sollutions Colloids
* clear & transparent * Milky
* Sollutions let light through * abosrb light
What do solutions and colloids have in common?
Both are HOMOGENOUS mixtures
What does RATE OF DISSOLVING refer to?
The time it takes a soluble to disolve/absorb in a solvent
eg. time it takes sugar to disolve in water
Name the factors that influence the rate of dissolving
- Temperature
- Particle size
- Stirr / Shake
- Pressure
Discuss Temperature
Most Liquid and Solid particles are MORE soluble at higher temperature (disolve easier),
eg. coffee powder disolve easier in boiling water
Gas is more soluble at low temp,
eg. Factory use dam water to cool machines, pump water back into dam the oxygen disolved in the water will escape faster with warm water, dangerous for living organisms (less oxygen in water)
Discuss Particle Size
Larger particles take longer to dissolve than smaller particles
Discuss Stir / Shake
Particles will dissolve quicker when solution is shaken, stirred or agitated
Explain Pressure as rate of disolving
Refers to Dissolving gasses. When a can of cool drink is closed the gas is absorbed in the cool drink,. High Pressure
When the can is opened the gas escapes immediately and the pressure is less/lower and the gas will keep on escaping
What is solubility?
When a liquid, gas or solid can disolve into another liquid, gas or solid. eg. H2O
